Sixth Summit - Mt. Kosciuszko PDF Print E-mail

Mt. Kosciuszko Oct, 16th through Oct 25th 2011-12

Mount Kosciuszko

At 2228 meter, Mount Kosciuszko is the highest mountain on mainland Australia. It may not be the highest mountain in the world but it is one of the oldest. The Aboriginals called the mountain Tar-Gan-Gil. They visited the area for ceremony, socializing, sharing and trading. The mountain received its present name in 1840 when Polish geologist and explorer Count Paul de Strzelecki named it in honor of General Tadeusz Kosciuszko, a Polish patriot and freedom fighter. Strzelecki said the name occurred to him because he was “amongst a free people who appreciate freedom”.

Some 30,000 people make the trek to the summit of Mount Kosciuszko each year. Until 1974 it was possible to drive a car up there, today the only way to reach the top is to walk, or in winter, to ski. Most people walk from either Charlotte Pass on the Summit Walk or from Thredbo on the Kosciuszko Walk, which links up via a chairlift ride from Thredbo.

The hardest hike is the 21.5km circuit which combines the Main Range Walk and the Summit Walk. You will cross the famous Snowy River literally and take in all four glacial lakes. There are dramatic views of Mount Sentinel and Watsons Crags. The crags, formed from an outcrop of metamorphosed sedimentary rock dating back 450 million years, plummet off the western face of Mount Twynam. They present a jagged contrast to the rounded granite peaks that dominate the range.

Depending on the weather, the gorgeous alpine wildflowers burst into colour in December, January and February. With wonderful names such as: Alpine Stackhousia, Hoary Sunray and Snow Beard Heath the delicate shades of white, yellow, purple and orange scatter the rugged landscape.

The walk to Mount Kosciuszko is suitable for most ages and fitness levels. Guided tours are available from Thredbo and private operators from a one day hike to an overnight trek. If you are traveling alone just ensure you prepare properly as the mountains ‘make their own weather’. Take plenty of water and waterproof clothing… and your camera!

Seventh Summit - Mt. Aconcagua PDF Print E-mail

Aconcagua Expedition 6,962m –Argentina
Fix departure February 22nd to March 10th 2011-2012

WHEN IS THE BEST CLIMBING SEASON?
The best time of the year to climb the mountain is during the austral summer from December until early March. One can expect more snow and higher rivers early in the season, followed by increasingly drier conditions as the season progresses. While Aconcagua is entirely within the Republic of Argentina, the Pacific Ocean is only 150 kilometers to the west. The mountain receives almost all of its bad weather during the austral summer from the moist, humid winds that blow from the west off the Pacific Ocean. A typical scenario is that these winds are driven upwards by the western slope of the Andes, where the air cools, condenses, and forms the lenticular cloud that covers the summit: the famous viento blanco or white wind, a sign of snow and high winds at altitude. These westerly winds can also generate fierce electrical storms during the summer. But summer storms are relatively rare on Aconcagua, and the sun shines for most of the climbing season for days on end. The peak climbing month seems to be February, and climbing conditions are reported to be the best then. However, more and more climbers seem to be on the mountain during Christmas. The rivers are much higher during this period, but there is also more snow on Aconcagua.

Eighth Summit - Mt. Everest PDF Print E-mail

Mt. Everest 8,850m - Nepal
Fixed departure: March 25 - June 1, 2011/2012

Hillary and Norgay Climb Mount Everest (1953): After years of dreaming about it and seven weeks of climbing, New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Nepalese Tenzing Norgay reached the top of Mt. Everest, the highest mountain in the world, at 11:30 a.m. on May 29, 1953.

Mt. Everest had long been considered un-climbable by some and the ultimate climbing challenge by others. Soaring in height to 29,035 feet (8,850 m), the famous mountain lays in the Himalayas, along the border of Nepal and Tibet, China.

Testimonial

A. C. Sherpa provided an inside journey of his homeland and took us to places like Namche Bazar, the Tengpoche monastery, KallaPattar near the Everest basecamp and many other wonderful sites culminating in a 3 day climb up Island Peak at over 20,000 feet. This was without doubt a great adventure and spiritual pilgrimage for me and unforgetable memories to behold. ~ Otto Sperka Manager - The Harbor Club Seattle/Bellevu
